About Test Of English as a Foreign Language

The TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.

TOEFL iBT Test Structure

Listening

  • Length: 60–90 minutes
  • 4–6 lectures, each 3–5 minutes long with six questions apiece
  • 2–3 conversations, each 3 minutes long with five questions apiece
  • Tip: Introduces more than one native English accent
  • Scoring: 0–30 points

Speaking

  • Length: 20 minutes
  • 2 independent tasks: speak about a familiar topic
  • 4 integrated tasks: speak based on what you read and hear
  • Tip: You have 30 seconds to prepare and one minute to respond
  • Scoring: 0–4 points, converted to a 0–30 score scale

Reading

  • Length: 60–100 minutes
  • 3–5 passages from academic texts, each about 700 words long
  • 12–14 questions per passage
  • Tip: Includes a glossary to define key words
  • Scoring: 0–30 points

Writing

  • Length: 50 minutes
  • 1 integrated task: write based on what is read and heard
  • 1 independent task: support an opinion
  • Tip: Typing is required
  • Scoring: 0–5 points, converted to a 0–30 score scale

When Is The TOEFL Test Held?

  • Computer based TOEFL test is held all-round-the-year.
  • Unlike other exams, one can choose one’s own date and time for taking the TOEFL test.
  • The test is administered in few major  cities five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day.
  • September to December is the high season for TOEFL test, so in case one intends to take the test during this period, he needs to register very early (say 90 days in advance) to get a date of your choice.
  • Otherwise, registering at least three days in advance is mandatory.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification

  • For taking Test of English as a Foreign Language, TOEFL Test no minimum educational qualification is required.
  • Natives who have English as their secondary mode of communication should undertake TOEFL test. Ideally. they should be in their 11th grade as TOEFL is considered tough for students below the 11th grade.
  • There is no restriction either in terms of age/qualifications for taking TOEFL
  • As far as Indian candidates are concerned, ordinarily a pass in 10+2 level of any recognised Indian Board or University is a suitable qualification to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test, although the level of the test is little on the higher side.

Exemption from TOEFL

Many Higher educational Institutions often do not require TOEFL test scores from certain categories of international applicants.

These include:

  • Non native speakers who hold degrees or diplomas from postsecondary institutions in English-speaking countries (e.g., the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand).
  • Non-native speakers who have successfully completed at least a two-years course of study in which English was the language of instruction.
  • Transferred students from institutions in the United States or Canada whose academic course work was favourably evaluated in relation to its demands and duration.
  • Non-native speakers who have taken the TOEFL test within the past two years.
  • Non-native speakers who have successfully pursued academic work at schools where English was the language of instruction in an English-speaking country for a specified period, generally two years.
  • As the eligibility requirements come with added demands from various individual Institutions, students must contact prospective institutions directly for admission requirements i.e. Requirement of TOEFL score, etc.

Register Online

  • Register 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Pay with a credit/debit card: American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or VISA. One can also use an electronic cheque (e-cheque) if he/she has a bank account in the United States or its territories.
  • Payment can also be made using a registration voucher obtained from a local master TOEFL iBT Resource centre or a voucher reseller.

  • Registration closes seven days before the test date opted for (not including the day of the test).
  • Late registration by phone closes at 5 p.m. local test centre time on the business day before the test and has a late fee of US$35.

Register By Mail

  • Download and fill out a Registration Form. Spell your name exactly as it appears on the identification you will bring on test day.
  • Choose one of the payment methods listed on the form.
  • Send the form with your payment to the address on the form or to your Regional Registration Center.
  • Forms must be received at least four weeks before your test date.
  • If you do not receive a confirmation, call the location where you mailed your paperwork — at least three business days before your registration deadline.

Register in Person at a TOEFL iBT Resource Center

  • In some areas, one can purchase test registration vouchers with local currency and/or register in person at a master TOEFL iBT Resource Centre.
  • Registration deadline is seven days before the test date.
  • Late registration closes three days before your test date and has a late fee of US$35.
