Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur)

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, also known as IIT KGP or IIT Kharagpur, is located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, about 120 km west of Kolkata. It offers more than sixty undergraduate courses in various disciplines. It has the highest student enrollment among the IITs. The institute was formally inaugurated in 1951 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Founded in the old Hijli Detention Camp, it one of the rare institutions that started in a prison house. It was declared as an institution of national importance in 1956 through an Act of Parliament, conferring it an autonomous status. It has more than 9000 students on campus. Admission is highly selective and is conducted on the basis of JEE.

Ranked No.1 For The Year 2018 Among Architecture Institutes In India By NIRF. and Also Ranked Fourth among engineering institutions in India By NIRF and Also Ranked 4th Among Law Institutions In Indai By NIRF. India Today ranked IIT KGP Second among engineering institutions in India, in 2017. In the India Today rankings, it has remained among the top five engineering institutions in India since 2006. It is ranked fourth in terms of reputation, academic input, infrastructure and placements. Because of its reputation and high student enrolment, admissions are highly competitive.
Campus Infrastructure
The campus infrastructure is modern and Wi-Fi enabled. The classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with projectors. It has a large central library containing more than 300,000 volumes and 1400 periodicals. The library is computerised, providing access to foreign university libraries. All the departments and laboratories have internet connectivity and are connected through VLANs. Being a residential institution, IIT KGP has 20 Halls of Residence for accommodating students.
Academics
The undergraduate degrees offered by IIT KGP are four-year programmes of eight semesters. The first year has common courses for all the engineering streams. Students are given the option of changing their departments after the first two semesters (first year). Department-specific courses known as depth courses are taken from the second year onwards. Apart from depth courses, students also take interdisciplinary breadth courses. Industrial training is provided at the end of third year.
Facilities
The institute has three banks within its premises. It also has a market for daily necessities such as groceries, tailoring, medicines, etc. Students also have access to food joints located on campus. The institute provides medical facilities through the B. C. Roy Technology Hospital, which is situated at the center of the campus. An on-campus gymkhana offers facilities for indoor and outdoor sports, swimming and workouts. The institute also supports activities through the Aquatics Society, Music Society, Dramatics Society, Film Society, etc.
Guest House:
The Institute hosts all visitors in four guest houses, three in Campus and one in Kolkata. Regular catering facilities are available in all guest houses.

 
Placements
All-round Career Development Programme - The Institute organizes various programmes to improve soft skills, professional communication and personality through career counselling by professional agencies/experts. Students are also assisted in preparing professional resumes by conducting resume writing workshops. Management development programs are conducted by experts. The Career Development Centre also assists the departments in organizing Industry oriented workshops, leadership talks, lectures, competitions, Curriculum Oriented Career Prospects (COCP) Workshops including specialized niche areas.
