Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras)

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM or IIT Madras), is located in Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu. It offers more than thirty five undergraduate courses in various disciplines. The institute, which has more than 6,000 students, was established with technical assistance from the German Government. Formal inauguration of the institute was done by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, in 1959. Admission is on the basis of performance in JEE. Since 2005, IITM has remained among the top five engineering institutes in India.
The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. Chennai is the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India.

Ranking Explanation
IITM was ranked fifth by India Today in 2016 In The Category Of Engineering. It has maintained its position among the top five engineering institutes in India for more than nine years. India Today ranked IITM third in terms of reputation, academic input, infrastructure and placements.Outlook Ranked IITM 4th In The Category of Engineering For The Year 2016.
Campus Infrastructure and Facilities
IITM campus is large, spread over several hundred acres of land. The classrooms, laboratories, library, and computer labs are air-conditioned. The campus has several food joints, two guest houses, one hospital, a Post Office, a telecom centre, two shopping centres, and three temples. It also has more than ten hostels for accommodating students. The central library provides access to full text digital and printed resources, online databases, e-journals, audio video cassettes, books, patents, theses, and reports.
Central Library:
Welcome to the Central Library which is one of the central support services of IIT Madras. The mission of the Central Library is to provide information services and access to bibliographic and full text digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and informational needs of the Institute Community.The Central Library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of CD-ROMs, On-line databases, audio video cassettes, books, e-journals, patents, e-standards, theses, reports, monographs etc. The library homepage will provide electronic access to various full text & bibliographical databases & e-journals.                 
Central Workshop:
Workshop is an educational platform where science is translated into technology. Central work shop is centralized facility of the Institute and it is one among those that serve, support and enhances the academic process of B.Tech and M.Tech Students, M.S and PhD Research Scholars.

Student Life
The student body at IITM is multicultural, with students coming from all parts of the country as well as foreign regions. The institute conducts an annual technical festival called Shaastra, which involves symposia, conferences, workshops, technical exhibitions, and competitive activities. Students can also participate in Saarang, IITM’s annual social and cultural festival that hosts cultural events. In addition to these, the individual departments also conduct their own festivals such as the Biofest (conducted by the Biotechnology department) and Forays (conducted by the Mathematics department).
Housing
IITM is a residential institute with more than ten independent hostels for accommodating students. Each room in the hostels is provided with a bookshelf, chair, cot, and ceiling fan. Every hostel is equipped with necessary amenities such as washing machines, telephones and internet. The campus has facilities for sports and recreation. Students can make use of the large gymnasium, tennis court, football field, swimming pool, cricket stadium and hockey field on campus.
Placement
IITM has a Training, Placement and Public Relations Office that offers career guidance and placement assistance to students. Pre-placement talks and workshops are held on campus for interaction between prospective employers and students. Campus interviews are conducted by hundreds of prominent companies that visit the institute every year. The students can also take up internships in various sectors including Consulting, Analytics, Core, FMCGs, Finance, and Government Institutions. The average salaries offered to IITM students generally stand at around 9 lakhs per annum.
