Presidency College, Chennai

Presidency College is an arts, science and commerce college located in Chennai.  The institute started out as Madras Preparatory School.  It was founded in 1840, subsequently and it was promoted to high school, graduation college and finally to Presidency College.  The Presidency College is one of the oldest government funded institutions in India.  The college gained autonomy in 1987.  It offers around 18 undergraduate courses and selection to the college is determined by the marks scored in XII board exams.  Further selection details are provided by the college itself.

Ranking
Presidency College has been ranked by India Today as the top 19th college for science, 15th for Commerce and 15th for humanities studies in India.  The college has moved up in the Science colleges’ poll from 16th in 2011 to 10th in 2012.  It has been a regular part of the list and has been relegated to the lower half of the top 10 very recently.  In terms of Humanities studies, the college has witnessed a major downslide from 10th in 2011 to 20th in 2012.  Admission to Presidency College is a tough proposition as it is an institution which is held in high regard.
Facilities
There are a multitude of facilities available to the students.  The college has 2 hostels for men and women, a canteen a small basic store, an extension counter of Central Bank of India, a post office and a health-care unit functioning inside the campus.
Student union
The Presidency College Students Union imparts training to the students of the college in organisation, leadership and public speaking activities.  All of the students who enrol are automatically considered members of the student union by default.  Other activities which fall under the union’s purview are the athletic association and the alumni association.
Placement
The placement cell at Presidency College is headed by Dr. A. Subbarayan, Head of the Department of statistics.  The cell keeps a regular count of the number of students enrolled and also maintains close ties with diverse companies from different sectors and industries. The placement cell aids the employers who conduct placement drives.

Presidency College is one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges in India and they have a history of noted alumni. Some of the names include:

     •    Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Aiyer, Dewan of Travancore
     •    Paravastu Chinnayya Soori, Telugu scholar
     •    Sister R. S. Subbalakshmi, educator and social reformer (First Hindu woman graduate in the Madras Presidency)
